Claude Video Editor: 3 Starter Prompts to Edit Videos Without a Timeline

October 23, 2026•3 min read

Your Claude video editor cheat sheet — the 3 starter prompts from my reel, ready to copy and paste.

Real talk: editing is the reason half my videos never got posted.
Not ideas. Not filming. Editing. The trimming, the captioning, the “ugh, I said that sentence twice” of it all.

So when I say Claude can now edit videos, I don’t mean it in a hype way. I mean it in a this gave me my evenings back way. Let me break it down.

How the Claude Video Editor Actually Works
Claude doesn’t have a timeline you drag clips around on. There’s no editing button.

Here’s the practical version: in Claude Code (inside the Claude desktop app — you’ll need a paid Claude plan, because the free one doesn’t include it), you drop in your raw video and type what you want in plain English. Claude transcribes your audio word by word, so it knows exactly where the pauses, the “ums,” and the restarted sentences are. Then it writes and runs the code that cuts them out, burns in your captions, and exports a finished video.

It reads the transcript, not the picture. So it’s strongest on talking videos, tutorials, and screen recordings — and you still watch the final cut before you post it. Not magic. A very good assistant doing the grunt work.

The 3 starter prompts

Prompt 1 — Your first cut

Transcribe this video with timestamps for every word. Then cut out the silences longer than half a second and any sentence I restart. Keep the strongest version of every point. Export a vertical 1080×1920 MP4.

Prompt 2 — Captions in your style

Burn captions into the video from the transcript. Bold sans-serif, white text with a black outline, highlight the spoken word in yellow. One line at a time, big enough to read on a phone.

Prompt 3 — Teach it your style (do this once, reuse forever)

Remember this as my editing style: [describe your caption look, your intro, your end card, your pacing]. Save it and apply it to every video I give you in this folder.

That third one is the cheat code. The first video takes a little setup. The tenth one is just “edit this one like the others.”

Keep it real before you start

You need a computer, not just your phone — Claude Code runs in the desktop app.
Start with one short clip. Learn how it thinks on something low-stakes.
Review every cut. Claude handles words beautifully; it does not know your prettiest angle, and it will not catch everything.
If editing has been your bottleneck, this removes the bottleneck. It doesn’t remove you — your taste is still the whole point.

Now go use it

Try Prompt 1 on your next raw clip and see what comes back. If you want more breakdowns like this — AI tools explained in plain English, for real businesses — join Between Us & the Bots, my newsletter: hellochristiana.com/newsletter
